Psychiatry is more off a medical field that relies on assessing the symptoms of a person to find a medication that will help them. If this is what you are interested in it then you will likely not find something similar.

Psychology, on the other hand, offers many alternative options. You can pursue degrees in Psychology or in Social Work and then there is the whole field of Life Coaching. You can specialize in certain areas such as research or behaviors or children.

Clinical Psychology. Forensic Psychology. Both include alot of research.

Since psychiatrists are M.D.s, the pay scale is usually higher than that of a psychologist, which requires a Ph.D. For the better money, go with PhD and MD … psychiatrist. For research, go for PhD with no authority, at least at the present time, to prescribe meds. Or stay in research all the way and earn the most money as a scientific researcher. Lots of grants and funding out there for serious researchers on a quest to find answers and solutions. Of course, becoming an MD or a practicing PhD will place you in closer contact with real people, whereas scientic research will keep you distant from the public pretty much. Big decision, but intelligently planning your university courses will enable you to make a more sound decision as you complete specific classes and you obtain more insight into your true calling. It is extremely helpful, in any case, to interview a licensed professional in the field of question and pick his/her brain for info, and to get a reality check about pros and cons of specific careers.
