Becoming a Psychiatrist, just got out of high school.?
I graduated from High School about a year ago, ever since then, I moved out on my own, for reason I’d not like to discuss.
I’m finally in a position where I can attend college.
I didn’t do too well in 9th-11th grade, my senior year I did extremely well (no electives, just core classes, like English IV, Economics, etc). Didn’t get lower than a B.
My ending GPA was around 2.8~ or so.
So, didn’t really get much of a scholarship.
I feel stuck. I don’t have a lot of money to pay for courses, as I live on my own. My parents can only help so much.
That being said, after I attain my B.S., I read that the next step would be Med school?
There’s no way I can afford that.
I read online about the AFHPSP ( I don’t know if I got that acronym right
), in which you join the active service and do a few tours, and donate an equal amount of time (4 years), and they’ll completely pay your Medical school tuition, included residency, food, books, etc. Well that seems like my only choice but, it’s the Army … So, besides that, what are my other choices?
I really feel that it’s unfair, 9-11th grade, I didn’t really understand the consequences of my actions, I was a kid, those were furthest from my mind. Is it too late? It’s my life long goal to become a Psychiatrist, namely behavioral psychiatry / forensic psychiatry.
What do you recommend I do?
I’m 18 btw, 19 in a month and a half.

Why don’t you go to a counselor at a community college? One of your nearby community colleges might be part of a program that facilitates transferring to a four-year school.
I didn’t graduate from high school with the best grades. I went to a community college for a couple of years, earned a higher GPA than high school, then transferred to a 4-year university. I had enrolled in a program that guaranteed transfer to a nearby university, as long as I completed a specified list of classes with a high GPA at the community college.
Since community college was so cheap, I didn’t have to worry about finances as much for the first few years.
About med school, I don’t think most people can afford that (I don’t really know). I thought many people took out loans (or applied for some type of financial aid) after getting their B.S.?

It is not too late.
Try the Army; you will be exposed to many other career oportunities. You will gain discipline, skills you’ve never considered and there’s a high chance of travel.
Hope you do well.

I’m wondering if you want to do Psychiatry or Psychology.
Psychiatry: Bachelor’s degree, Med School, Residency. (11 years of study)
But many Psychology programs are 6 years of study, Bachelor’s Master’s. I knwo Forensic Psychology is like this.
Your GPA is low so I’d go to a community college, get that GPA about 3.5, transfer to a 4 year after 2 years of CC, and earn a Bachelor’s degree. Psychology or Science is fine. If you’re doing Psychiatry, make sure you do your pre-med checklist, if you’re doing a Master’s degree, make sure you have the requirements to admission to a Clinical Psychology or Forensic Psychology program.
For Med School entrance, expect you’ll need around a 3.5 GPA for entrance, while for Master’s degrees, a 3.0 should suffice to get you into somewhere.
