Can I still become a Psychiatrist when I have a GED and not a High School Diploma?
I am still going to go to college and so on, but having a GED and not a High School Diploma, will that hold me back?

A GED is sometimes called a General Equivalency Diploma. In other words, it is just like a High School Diploma, except you didn’t get it from high school. As long as you have a GED or a high school diploma, you can still go to college. The professional requirements of becoming a psychiatrist are listed on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychiatrist#Professional_requirements. You can still become a psychiatrist if you have a GED instead of a High School Diploma. If you have read David Pelzer’s books, he has talked about joining the Air Force with a GED instead of a High School Diploma. In the Air Force you have to have a High School Diploma to enlist. As long as you have a GED, you can still go to college and become a psychiatrist.

It is your grades in college and medical school that count.

Yes, as long as the college/university you choose is okay with a GED. You have to become a general practicioner before you can become a psychiatrist though so all in all it takes about 11 years to become a psychiatrist.

A friend of mine is in med. school now and he only has a GED. He got into the wrong crowd in high school but when he was in his early 20s realized that he wanted more in his life so he attended a community college, has an almost perfect GPA and transfered to a 4 year school and so on. Now he is at med school. nothing is impossible.
