Do I have to study medicine to become a psychiatrist?

I am currently in school to get my teaching license in special education, I just started. What I want to do when I get my license and start teaching is work on getting my masters in psychology, then my doctorate in psychiatry. Is this even a possibility? I have tried talking to a few different advisers at my college but they kind of laughed at me.

Psychiatrists have a MD, not a PhD (medical degree, not a doctorate). You’d need a PhD to be a psychologist. You’d need to do the premed classes in college along with whatever major you choose.

Yes, to be a psychiatrist, you MUST be a licensed medical doctor.

I can see why. Someone who cannot distinguish between Psychology and Psychiatry has no business studying either.
