Do you trust the field of psychiatry?
I personally have been helped somewhat by my anti psychotics and anti depressants, but I’m no where near better since my problems began two years ago when I was 23. I can’t work and may apply for SSA, but I don’t want to be alienated by friends and family for making that decision.
Anyways, I see alot of videos on youtube about dispelling the myth of psychiatry and I want to know if the videos have any real basis in their argument? One video talks about psychiatry’s horrible past and calls it a pseudoscience. I really don’t have a position myself so I would like to hear what you think about psychiatry. Has it helped you? Do you think mental illness really exists or are they just labels so psychs can make money?
Sorry I don’t have the links as i don’t remember where I found the videos. I’m sure there are many of them that talk about the same thing though.
Okay here is a link, but it’s a long video.

@ Paul
Can you elaborate? It’s pretty easy just to write "no."

I didn’t watch the video but here is my opinion…I believe that some doctor’s know what their talking about and have studied for years and then take the time to make the correct diagnosis. Then there are some that are not so dedicated and even though they may try, they have a hard time diagnosing a disorder as so many are similar. I definitely believe in mental illness as sometimes not being able to be controlled like for example a chemical imbalance, this is something that can’t be faked but it really exists and the correct medication can change your life for the better. Yes, I have been helped and yes, I believe with the right doctor(and they are out there) that takes his/her time to make a correct diagnosis can be most helpful in leading a normal life. This is not an easy feat as there are so many disorders and meds. Don’t give up, but do get a second or third opinion if needed, you have 1 life and you deserve to live it to the fullest.

Mental illness DEFINITELY exists. I have one and it is a pain in the a$$! I am also a psychiatry major at my university. It is very fascinating and I trust it 100%. These experts know what they are doing and have nothing but your best interests in mind.
There is such a stigma around mental illnesses that people are always trying to shed bad light onto the whole idea of "mental disorders"

They can help alot they are not going to judge for what you hae to say it gives you a way to be known. They have really helped a lot of people and I think it is a good idea to have one. It really exists but yes some people do make things up so you have to find one who won’t lie. You know if you have a problem or not.

Just my opinion. Does mental illness really exist?? Yes. Just as high blood pressure exists or heart problems. It is in the brain–and not in the trunk of the body. Do I trust the field of psychiatry??? Somewhat. I think mental illness can be helped. I think some doctors are more inclined to help than others. Maybe just instinct–a good guess–even the patient with confidence in their doctor??? But medical doctors aren’t always right on the first diagnosis. Some medicines work better on some people than others. So lots of medical help is a guess–trial and error. Don’t give up. Keep trying and hopefully things will be better. Good Luck to you.
