does online therapy work?
with so many therapists now working online rather than face to face, saving us a lot of money on travelling, and time too, how many of us would choose an online therapist, who works by email, web cam or phone, rather than findng one we can travel to? I personally prefer online because it means I have a much bigger choice of who to consult and the money I save on travelling and the time I save virtually pays for it too. Also you can consult people at odd hours when it is by email, which you cannot do when meeting them. BUT DOES IT WORK FOR YOU?

It does help in a lot of cases, especially if the problem presented is one of a more private nature, but overall, I prefer face to face contact. The bad thing about online therapy is that it takes away all the subconscious cues from things such as body language and tone of voice. I know a lot of people in therapy are more emotional than analytical, so written words are of little value unless you present them at just the right time and with them perceiving them correctly. I don’t know about webcams, and while probably better than the average documents as they allow you to guide their thinking rather than being read and possibly perceived in the wrong way forever (first impressions), they still do not provide the measure of an emotionally aware spirit communicating with others. I’m sure you know that conversation utilizes so many subconscious cues that we are both aware, and also cues that we are not yet educated about. So, yes, it works, but I think the real question is one of efficacy and conversation skills. It’s easier to persuade, guide, and use things such as neuro-linguistic programming in person. I’ve gotten more out of 3 sessions of therapy than hours on a computer, knowing what I wanted to search for. Most people would rather search on their own time anyway, and if you don’t grab their attention, they’ll go back to searching. I would suggest not ever giving up face to face contact, and making as much of a human touch as possible if online. Remember, we really want your help, and it wasn’t easy to break down the pride enough to approach you initially. So some people really need to feel your presence. Where’s the love?
