Help - anxiety?

How effective are the current psychological techniques in the treatment of anxiety?
Has your anxiety been cured by CBT, psychotherapy or NLP? Just to tell something about my problem - I found that I can’t really relax entirely in front of people, especially strangers and that whenever I am expected to perform in front of an audience, an enormous sense of anxiety seems to grow inside and consume me and this naturally has an impact upon my performance. My brain doesn’t seem to be able to function at all when stressed. I lose the ability of language, memory, reason, etc.

I assume that these techniques are fairly effective because they appear to be endorsed by medical professionals and yet I can’t help being skeptical about the abilities and qualifications of the counsellors who practice them, having had a poor experience with a well known hypnotherapist. The only change I noticed was a lighter wallet and several hours out of my life wasted on the drivel he was pouring out. It is quite easy to make money out of the desperate.

Zoloft is not the only one either. There are a number of new SSRIs on the market that are specially indicated for anxiety disorders or depression with anxiety. Psychotherapy can help, but skip the NLP, etc.

If you don’t have an aversion to taking meds, you might want to consider trying Zoloft. All of my life I’ve had anxiety attacks when riding in automobiles. A short time after taking Zoloft the attacks stopped. Hell, I don’t even mind my husband’s driving anymore!
