How long does it take to get into psychotherapy/counseling?
I am considering going into psychology, and I was wondering if you can develop a viable career in it with only a B.A., or do you need a M.A. to get into it?

To practice in psychotherapy or counseling, you are required to be certified (in many developed countries); such certification almost always requires a masters of some sort. An example which does not have laws currently protecting it is sex therapy which you could do following undergrad - however, to truly be successful you’d likely need a masters as well. You are not required to get a PhD to become a psychotherapist or counselor. In short, you’ll need an Honours Bachelor degree (4 years) and a masters (2 years).

MA is preferable if you want to be a proffessional. I’d say get your doctorate if you want to be able to prescribe meds and make lots of money. Other than that a BA is probably good enough if you just want to be a councilor.

There are jobs available for those with a BA in psychology or counseling. They are generally jobs where the individual assists a psychologist or other mental health worker and are low on the pay scale. A PhD is required in most states to become licensed and provide psychological services without supervision. One with an MA can usually provide services with supervision by a licensed psychologist or counselor. Check the requirements with your college and your state licensing boards.

Bare minimum of a master’s degree to practice counseling/psychotherapy independently in the USA in most states. It is a licensed profession regulated by the state.
