Is treatment for depression expensive?

Ok so, I researched a bunch of sites on depression and I have pretty much have most of the symptoms. I think I need help but…I really don’t want this to be a burden on my parents money-wise, because honestly…. that’s just gonna make me feel worse. I’m not excatly sure what I’m asking here but I’m just gonna go with the question: Is treatment going to cost a lot?

Talk to your parents to see if they can get you to see a doctor and if the insurance will pay for it. Then talk to your counselor at school to see if there are community programs available for you to talk to someone. There are usually public mental health centers available. If you can get a counselor to talk to and a doctor to prescribe medicine (it could be a general doctor or pediatrician unless it is severe), then you should be set. Also ask about support groups. Depending on where you are and your life circumstances there may be something available. For example, if someone in your family is an alcoholic then AA sometimes has groups for children of alcoholics. My high school had a therapy center on campus and many colleges do, too.

It depends on what insurance your parents have. If they have good medical insurance then no.

It depends on if you do therapy (which can get pricey depending on if their insurance covers it) or medication. Most anti-depressants are on the $4.00 perscription list at Wal-Mart. But get help, I didn’t go in for help till I was in my 20’s, and looking back I can see where therapy and medicine would have helped a lot.

It doesn’t have to cost a lot, no. Depending on what state you live in, you may be able to get perfectly fine treatment at your local public mental health center. The fee is usually based on family income, so it is usually less expensive than going to a private clinic.

Good for you, for having the courage to take care of yourself. I hope you get to feeling better soon.
