My dog has been diagnosed with Cognitive Disfunction Syndrome (CDS). What can I do?

My vet has prescribed my dog Clamocalm. I looked it up and it is a medication for Seperation anxiety, but my vet says it is the same symptons as CDS, so it should help.

My dog has been on this for about 10 days and I have noticed limited, if any, positive effects of this treatment. Called the vet today and they said to continue treatment for another 4 days before considering other alternatives.

Is there any hope that my dog will improve from CDS? My vet recommends being patient and that permanent improvement is possible, but I am not sure I believe them.

Symptoms include being destructive and has constantly wanders all night, every night.

Does anyone have any recommendations of how to deal with this or can share any similar experiences?

Thank you.
I don’t want to put her down, but if she is in pain and has no chance of improving, I may have to deal with that realization.
Tinkywinky,
Go annoy someone else who doesn’t want real answers to their questions.

Walkinglady,
Thank you. That is the reassurance I need. I wanted to make sure I could trust my vet and it sounds like you think she is doing the right thing.

You need to trust your vet on this one. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome is hard to diagnose as there can be physical causes that aggravate the behaviour. But if they’re ruled out, there’s another drug your vet may want to consider if Clomicalm doesn’t work - it’s Anipryl which is used to treat Parkinson’s in humans.

There’s no need to put your dog down because of it - she’s not in any pain, not from CDS anyway. If she’s gotten destructive, you may want to consider either crate training her or getting an exercise pen she can be in when no one’s home. Put a comfy bed in it and a couple of her favorite toys.

Stay hopeful that there’s a drug available that will help your dog. If the drug she’s on isn’t working, insist that your vet try something else to help her.

I think if you let your dog wander the neighbourhood
at night you are an irresponsible dog owner.
I don’t know where the hell you live but we have to desex and register our dogs, walk them on a lead, pick up their poop
    and keep them securely fenced.
You don’t say dog’s age or how long you are away at work.
I’d say put the poor thing down and get a hamster or
    something you can look after.

check the link below and ask your vet. It seems expensive though , but I suppose thats relative to your income and how much you value your pet .
