Physicians Assistants working in Psychiatry?
I saw somewhere that a PA can specialize in Psychiatry. Do psychiatrists actually use PAs? I’m interested in psych, but would it be smarter to specialize in something else?
Thanks

The only pysch PAs I know were on inpatient psych wards (not in psych offices). Better to come out as a family practice PA then specialize as you can. Much, much more. flexible

I know one PA-C who "moonlighted" as a psych clinician. He was technically a cardiovascular surgical PA, but he filled in at the mental health ward from time to time. He would monitor medications, do intake evals, etc. He actually had a Bachelors and Masters degree in Psychology before returning to PA school to train in cardiac surgery, so that was part of the reason he filled in. He also filled in for the E.R. guys from time to time. PA-C is a pretty flexible credential.
