Psychiatry vs Psychology?
I really want to study psychiatry but I realised I didn’t take the correct subjects (I’m in matric now, so I can’t change them and the reason I didn’t take them before is because I didn’t know what I wanted to be). I would thus have to take a year of science in university and then continue my studies. It would take about FOURTEEN YEARS to study this! Psychology would take me about six years, but they earn much less than a psychiatrist.
I want to know why I have to study a medical degree - as a psychiatrist, when would I ever need to cut anybody open (lol) and I certainly don’t want to go to hospital and work there as an "intern" before specialising in psychiatry!! HELP!

Psychiatrists prescribe medication, psychologists don’t. Therefore psychiatrists need a medical degree.

Why are you in school in the first place? And why study what you are studying? Is it the prospect of earning at least five figures annually? Is it to have some fancy initials that you can put beside you name? Is this something that is expected of you or what you really want? OR…are you just interested in being able to help others through their difficulties? I apologize for the questions but these are some of things that I would examine closely, if I was in your position. On some level, you must have an above-average interest in helping others. Spin off vocations like Life Coach can be quite lucrative, does not require several years of schooling and is much more involved in sorting out a person’s living difficulties and playing a more active role in aiding a person to a happier and more productive life. 14 years more of study sounds pretty outrageous and I’d be feeling like tearing my hair out as well so you may want to begin to consider some options if the time factor is not favourable to you. This probably didn’t help much but, in the least, has allowed your mind to consider at least one other possible alternative. Good luck!
