Psychodynamic - They say that you need to go through this therapy to really know yourself?
Is this true? I know Freud said that psychoanalysis was the only way to break through to the true self. Is this the only way? Also, if you don’t think this is, why would they think talking to someone would be the only way?

That’s a brilliant question, but I don’t think you are aware of the many, many other more empirically supported theories of psychology of which psychoanalysis and psychodynamic pale in comparison. The primary modality I support is cognitive behavioral therapy, but that is because it has the most empirical support in treating event the most severe mental disorders–schizophrenia, bipoloar…etc. It is so successful there have been subgroups formed branching from it to treat even more specific types of illnesses such as dialectical behavioral therapy for bordeline personality disorder and the more recent acceptance commitment theory.
So, to sum up my answer there is a lot more to your question than you think. But that is good, because that gives you more direction to look for your answers.
