Psychology verses Psychiatry?

I am a junior college student currently studying psychology as my major, the thing is, many people tell me that psychology is a waste of time and you dont get good jobs with that degree, and told me to choose psychiatry instead of psychology. Now i was thinking about psychology because i knew that by doing psychology you dont have to do clinical work or counselor. I am trying to see what kind of business(POA,POB,ecomonics etc) would pair up with psychology the best, and if its possible to go from psychology to psychiatry, anyone have any comments?

Psychology is a PhD program. Psychiatry is an MD. Neither "has" to do counseling except during school. Psychiatrists, as medical doctors can prescribe meds. Psychologists can not.
