Psychotherapy over psychiatry?

To what degree should we appraoch one who is mentally imbalanced to help restore balance without a medicated approach? Should counselling and therapy not be tried before a pill is popped into the analysand/patient?
Personally i’m for the non-medicated approach.

Depends on what the clinical diagnosis is actually..

    Some people NEED medication…

I am for the NON medical side myself, as I was a sufferer of Panic attacks for 4 years of my life, I went to a councilor, who taught me how to breath, Use meditation and as well use visualizations to help. I never ONCE took a drug for it…
I am so much better now…All those people who pop pills cause they can’t deal with life…are stupid and are just damning the next generation to be as weak as they are right now..

A friend of mine took 13, and died.
Pills bring death in small doses. They firstly make you forget rather than remember, and then they persuade you that grief should be avoided, and that madness can’t teach you, and that you need to be rescued.
Who said you must be rescued at all costs?

Counseling should always be the first step. However, counseling is often not enough in a lot of cases. In these cases, a person should continue counseling, as well as given meds.

Medication should be a last resort, though it is necessary for a lot of psycho pathologies. Case in point - many people with Bipolar disorder commit suicide when they stop taking their meds (which they sometimes do because they feel "better" - because of the meds).

me too, man. I’ve been in therapy since I was six, and everyone just tried to dope me up. it doesn’t solve the patients problems, it just makes it easier on the people around them to deal with them for a short while. When someone has a chemical imbalance, we instead should deal with them as a whole person. there is a reason behind their brains secreting the wrong amounts of these neurotoxins. something is internally wrong. a holistic approach and lots of patience should result in some positive changes in the person with the imbalance. (don’t be too hard on them. it sucks when you get in trouble for something that isn’t entirely your own fault, but don’t let them get away with treating you like crap ALL the time either.)
