Trip Adviser! Is it a useful tool for travelers or merely psychotherapy for grumpy cheap people?

I consider myself to be a fairly demanding traveler but it occurs to me that I have stayed in hotels and eaten in restaurants all over the world that have been slagged by people on that web page. The anonymity of the internet makes it easy for unqualified people to critique businesses harshly without any liability to the person who submits or to Trip Adviser. So, is it actually a useful tool?

I find it very useful. Everyone has their own opinion but at least it brings to light the possible problems you may encounter at that establishment. I think it helps you make a more informed decision as to whether or not to patronize that business.
