What do I need to know about Psychotherapy and Psychiatry? (I'm in AS level right now)?
Hi,
I’m in year 12, taking biology, chemistry, psychology, maths + statistics and critical thinking. (My target grades set by the school are all A’s and one B in the summer)
I have a few questions:
1) What’s the difference between the two? (Content related and what the jobs actually do?)
2) What would be the average salary difference?
3) What would I need to apply for in university to get into these fields? (For psychiatry, apparently it’s medicine)
4) How would I ‘branch’ out into these fields?
5) What universities should I be looking to apply to? And what are their requirements for entry?
6) Will I need any related work experience? I’ve applied for gp shadowing but I have to write a CV, so that will be soon.
7) WIll I need maths? I’m planning on dropping it (as well as the compulsory dropping of critical thinking)
That’s all for now, if I think of anymore questions I will add them on/post another question.
Thank you so much if you read this and answer, your help is really appreciated.
Also, how long does it take to become a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist?

I understand that the basic line is 8 years for psychiatrist. This is because it involvess thedispersingg of medication. For both there is a certain amount of internship and after the internship, ( for therapist expecually) a lot of employerss require that you have so many years of experiencee working in a office with psychiatrist before moving to own practice.
Also both fields requirer on going education, so you never really get done with learning.
Each year there are certainr equirements that differs from state to state to keep your lissions to your practice. The more experiencee and credentials you have the better the job market.
