What is inpatient hospital depression treatment like?

Depression sufferer of at least eight years and medication and therapy has not worked well. I continue to have uncontrollable anger and self harm and/or abuse substances daily and cannot seem to stop. This has been going on for 3-4 years. If I were to go to the hospital for inpatient care, how long would I be there? What would it be like? What would I do about school (i’m a senior)? Will it work? What else do I need to know about it?

I am a nurse in a psychiatric hospital. I used to work with children and adolescents. Now I work with adults. It sounds like inpatient hospitalization would help you. You do not have to go through life feeling like this. If you are hospitalized you will be placed on a unit with other people your age. You most likely will have a room mate and will attend school. Your doctor and therapist can arrange with your school to get your assignments from your teachers so you don’t fall behind. You will meet with your doctor everyday and will be started on medication to help your symptoms decrease. You will also meet with your therapist and talk about things that are troubling you. Everything you say to them is kept confidential and your therapist will try to help you deal with your problems in a nonjudgmental way. You will also attend group sessions with other teenagers and the group members help each and interact with each other . YES, IT WORKS. I was first a patient on a psych floor when I was teenager and now I am back on the psych floor as a nurse reaching out to hurting people because when I was hurting there were those professional that helped me. Good luck and do this for yourself. You are worth it.

As long as the therapist tells or recommends.

You will be probably be privately taught, at the hospital.
