A lot of the medications for anxiety and depression overlap because they are both caused by abnormalities of chemicals in the brain. As for distinguishing symptoms depression is more a mood disorder, the person who is unable to come out of a sad mood and is no longer interested in things that used to bring them pleasure. Anxiety on the other hand is more like someone who is on edge, has sweaty palms, a racing heart beat and is constantly worrying about things. As you can probably guess being anxious all the time can lead to depression and vice versa so a lot of people have mixed symptoms.
