There are several separate programs that you might be interested in: Counselor (the LPC or licensed professional counselor), Psychologist (licensed by each state), or Clinical Social Worker. To be able to sit for the exam for the license, each degree takes at least a Masters degree above the BA or BS.
The education department at a university has a counseling program where you can get a Masters or a Doctorate. The psychology department is the same. Some psych departments offer the PsyD degree which has no dissertation. Are you still with me or is this Greek?
The best way to find out about this is to go to a local university and ask for the psychology department or education department and talk to the people there. Some colleges have academic counselors that help.
You will need an advanced degree to counsel the public. I have a BA, an MS and a Ph.D. The doctorate earns you credibility with people and the state license to work. They love to call you doc.
Hope this helps.

Interesting….you most certainly need an advanced degree to become a psychotherapist or clinical counselor. In most states you will need to be licensed and that, too, requires an advanced degree. In addition to the educational qualifications you will need personal "qualifications" such as empathy, excellent listening skills, the ability to think on your feet, good personal boundaries, etc. It also helps if you are fairly emotionally stable, too. (You’d be suprised at how many therapists have unresolved personal baggage.)
