Whats the difference between a school counselor and a psychiatrist or psychotherapist?

How is the therapy different?
I know a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, but is the talking therapy different to a school counselor?

  1. I am not a link. Leave me alone said:

A school counselor is a counselor and educator who works in elementary, middle, and high schools to provide academic, career, college readiness, and personal/social competencies to all students through advocacy, leadership, systemic change, and teaming and collaborating with other stakeholders as part of a comprehensive developmental school counseling program.

A Psychotherapists employs a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change and that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family).

    Hope this helped.

School counselors are in no way therapists. You may get relief just talking to them but the same would happen with a priest, etc. They have studied a bit of psychology but I have found none of them competent when faced with a real problem.
