When does a school counselor send you to a psychiatrist?
I’ve seen a counselor at my college a few times and she hasn’t helped at all. She doesn’t really ask many questions, she waits for me to talk and I don’t know where to start. She said she would try to help me and then decide if I need to see a psychiatrist. How does she decide? Should I just seek one myself? I have battled with depression, self-esteem issues, and troubling past experiences for a few years now.

because a guidance counselor never analyze your problem but leads you to it. They are trained to listen, help you analyze your own problem and gain an insight on what you wish to do with it.
They can send you toa psychiatrist if they found out that there is really something in you that a normal counseling session cannot help. For example if your depression is so severe that you want o kill yourself or would like to commit suicide, your self esteem is so low, you cannot get out of the house or you are not looking at people, trying to cover your face by wearing big hats (name it they can spot the difference between normality and what’s not).
