When does a school counselor send you to a psychiatrist?
I’ve seen a counselor at my college a few times and she hasn’t helped at all. She doesn’t really ask many questions, she waits for me to talk and I don’t know where to start. She said she would try to help me and then decide if I need to see a psychiatrist. How does she decide? Should I just seek one myself? I have battled with depression, self-esteem issues, and troubling past experiences for a few years now.

I would definitely seek treatment independently if your counselor won’t give you a referral. In a last ditch effort, I would print off your entry on this forum and show it to the counselor. You may not be comfortable talking with her but she could clearly read your concerns and then see that she needs to give you a referral. Good luck!! : /

The only reason a therapist would send you to a psychiatrist is for medication. If you have been having depressive issues for a long time you probably need it. It’s okay. It doesn’t mean you are crazy. It just means that there is a physical problem in the area of the brain.
Of course she just sits there and waits for you to talk . That’s what a therapist does, listen. How can she help you if you won’t talk to her?
