Why does medical insurance cover psychiatry care but not psychotherapy?

Unless you go to a psychiatrist who puts you on meds, the regular psychologists are not covered by medical care. Is that the case with all insurance providers? I can’t find one that covers psycotherapy by a PHd and not an MD therapist.

As far as I know they’re all like that. I have no idea why its like that…
It doesn’t surprise me though, they don’t cover my antidepressants either, about 150 a month. I don’t even know why I have health insurance, waste of money.

And to first post, talking to friends and family isn’t the same as talking to an objective person trained to help you resolve your problems, the problem with psychiatrists is that they are often too quick to prescribe medicine when in a lot of cases the problem could have been resolved by therapy.

The short of it is that a therapist isnt a medical professional. They are somone that you pay huge amount of money to for them to listen and go uh huh.

Yes they might help, but so would your family, or friends.

Most therapists are working under a license/ certificate.

I mean you could go to a psychologist and probably get covered. The difference is there is more of a degree and education there. But they still arent a Dr.
